The file server is running linux software from
Ubuntu. The Server package is providing a
platform for the web server. This machine is
also sharing files through Samba protocol.
MySQL and Apache complete the
compliment of software. There is a default
page set up currently, with links to the
favorite family web sites.
The family uses four other computers for
normal day to day use. The machines are not
new, all of them have history. Rescued from
family and friends the cost of all these
computers has been limited to upgrade costs.
As you can see they are running a mixture of
operating systems. The Ubuntu workstation is
the most up to date out of all. A new
motherboard and 2 Gigs of memory performs
well for our use.
Memory is the easiest to upgrade. Installing a
new motherboard is not as daunting as it
sounds, although particular attention must be
paid to preventing static electricity buildup.
Looking for ideas and suggestions on how or
what to install in a home network.
